There are very strong indications that crisis is brewing in Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over recommendations that direct primary election should now be adopted for governors, members of National Assembly, state Houses of Assembly and local government elections.
Moved by what they regarded as a slap on their faces, the PDP governors have, therefore, resolved to fight it.
It was gathered that part of the recommendations of PDP constitution review committee is that indirect process will be used during the Presidential primaries, while the direct process will be used for other election. But the governors are kicking against it, arguing that what is good for the goose is also good for the gander, and that the indirect process must be applicable at all levels.
According to a source, the governors hurriedly met in Abuja, weekend, to review the situation and the position of the governors at the end of the meeting which was presented to the Committee Chairman was that the party cannot risk its winning formula of indirect process, even as they insist that delegates must be allowed to vote.
The new recommendation which the governors are fighting against stipulates that instead of using delegates, all party members will be allowed to vote, even as the governors are stressing that for logistics and cost, the party must settle for delegates while delegates must not be used for Presidential primaries alone.
Weighing the implication and position of the governors in the party, the constitution review committee of the party, as gathered, will be forced to meet today in Abuja where the members will present the report and what may be the new and old recommendations to the party’s caucus that will meet today at the Presidential villa for scrutiny.
The recommendations will then be presented to PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, that will meet tomorrow ahead of the National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting fixed for Wednesday where the issue would then be resolved.
