Group builds multi-million naira fire station in Lagos state, Nigeria

The Lagos Island Millennium Group on the Environment, LIMGE, yesterday, began the refurbishment and construction of a multi-million naira, world class and well-equipped fire station in the heart of  the city.
The project is a key component of LIMGE’s ongoing rebirth agenda for the Lagos Island with the ultimate aim of turning the Island into the Venice of Africa.

LIMGE which was established in 1999 has notched up impressive results in the work it has done with the Lagos State government through the Central Business District authority.

The advocacy and pressure group was instrumental to the eradication of area boys and reclamation of the Lagos Island Central Business District which had fallen into disrepair.

LIMGE’s new target, according to its President, Mrs. Taiwo Taiwo is to ensure “that no building on Lagos Island is ever gutted by fire again.”

This was one of our clear mandates from inception because we are aware of the fact that the Lagos Island area is densely populated with close clusters and has always been prone to fire incidents even from colonial times.

She added: “What LIMGE is doing is showing an example of Private Public Partnership for others to see and get involved in their communities so we can build a better Lagos and Nigeria.”

To achieve this LIMGE is working with enormous financial support from Shell Nigeria Exploration

Company (SNEPCO) to refurbish, extend, equip and retrain 100 fire men at the Ajele Fire station. When complete, the fire station will become the best in Nigeria with the ability to combat fire in any part of Lagos Island.

The project which will be officially flagged off by the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola at

a “Turning of the Sod” ceremony slated for February 16, 2012 will be ready for commissioning in by end of the third quarter of 2012.
