President Jonathan hails Shagari @ 87, tasks Catholic Church on school curriculum

President Goodluck Jonathan, Sunday, congratulated former President Shehu Shagari on his 87 birthday.
President Jonathan described the former president as an elder statesman, who had continued to make his wisdom and vast experience available to the nation, adding that Nigeria had benefited immensely from Shagari’s selfless contributions
.


He said President Shagari’s exemplary support for peace and national development was commendable and worthy of emulation by all well-meaning citizens.


A statement by Presidential spokesman, Mr. Reuben Abati, said the President prayed for continued good health and long life for Shagari.


Meanwhile, President  Jonathan, on Sunday, challenged Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, to review its education curriculum to meet the recent challenges facing the country.


President  Jonathan, who stated this at 1st plenary meeting of CBCN, in Abuja, noted that one of the major challenges facing the country now was to improve on the standard of education.


The President, represented by the Minister of Work, Mr. Mike Onolememen, explained that the review would assist in minimising social vices as students would get to know their duties to God and the nation.


He said: “I challenge you to take a critical review of the Catholic education curriculum with a view to making it more responsive to the peculiar challenges we face as a nation today.


“This will help to evolve a purposeful culture that recipients can leverage upon to enhance their values and perceptions of their duties to God and the nation.”
