Sanitation court jails 50 in Ebonyi

Over 50 persons were weekend convicted by Ebonyi State Environmental Sanitation court for loitering and failing to participate in the monthly environmental exercise put in place by the state government.

Reading out the verdict, Magistrate Chinue Ukwa, who quoted relevant sections of the law, convicted the defaulters of various charges, irrespective of excuses and pleas.

Ukwa described their failure to obey the state environmental laws as unfortunate and baseless.

Some of the defaulters, who pleaded not guilty, told Vanguard that they were returning from church when they were arrested by sanitaiton officers in the state.

The defaulters were asked  to pay a fine of N4, 000 or serve two months imprisonment each.

General Manager, Ebonyi State Environmental Protection Agency, ENSEPA, Chukwuemeka Oke, regretted the high level of violation of environmental laws by members of the public.

He also charged officers and men of the Nigerian Police not on duty to comply with the sanitation law in the state.
