Some unidentified gunmen have shot and killed the Chairman of the All
Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Rivers State, southsouth Nigeria, Elder
Julius Nwaofu in Port Harcourt.
It was gathered that Nwaofu was
shot dead at about 8.00 pm around the Obiri-Ikwerre axis of the
East-West road as he was coming into Port Harcourt from the airport
Wednesday.
One of the sons of the deceased, Barrister Taleh
Nwaofu, who confirmed the murder of his father, said he was returning
from a political meeting in Lagos when the incident occurred.
Taleh
further said the late ANPP chieftain was being driven by his wife when
the hoodlums opened fire on the vehicle, killing him while the wife was
not hurt.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO)
in the state, Mr. Benjamin Ugwuegbulem, who also confirmed the murder of
the ANPP chieftain, said the killers drove off to an unknown
destination after shooting and killing the politician at close range.
Ugwuegbulem
said men and officers of the command were working round the clock to
ensure that the perpetrators of the crime were arrested.
Meanwhile,
the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Rivers State has called for a
full scale investigation into the gruesome murder of Nwaofu.
In a
statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam, the
ACN said it is only a full investigation that would erase the impression
that there was on-going selective killing of opposition politicians in
the state.
ACN described as painful and unfortunate the brutal murder of Nwaofu.
Needam
condemned the rising rate of insecurity in the state, describing it as a
drawback on the progressive march of the state to catch up with other
civilised parts of the world.
Needam said it’s regrettable that
certain elements and devils incarnate may have sworn to checkmate the
radical progressive political opposition in the state which unknown to
them, has the capacity to turn back the hand of the clock of the state’s
agitation for justice, equity and freedom etc. “It has therefore become
highly imperative to probe the remote cause of the seeming selective
elimination of frontline politicians in the state. Nothing short of full
scale investigation is acceptable if the impression of selective
killing of opposition politicians in this state must be dismissed.
He assured that the voice of virile opposition in the state cannot be suppressed as such attempts will only embolden this voice.
He
regretted that the state has still not justified the huge sums of money
being earmarked for security of lives and property, alleging that
rather than making conscientious efforts to contain the ugly situation,
the ruling PDP elites are busy building false walls of Jericho around
themselves.
