The Chief of Defence Staff, Oluseyi Pentirin this morning said that
the country is losing an average of 3 million barrels of crude oil
monthly to illegal bunkerers.
He made this disclosure at the
public hearing currently being conducted by the House of Reps Joint
Committee on Petroleum Resources Down Stream and Naval Committee.
According
to Pentirin, efforts by the military to check this illegal bunkering
activities have not yielded the desired results because of the
complexity of the activities.
He said most of the badges used by the oil bunkerers are not registered.
To
this effect whenever security personnel attempt to make arrest, the oil
bunkerers will leave the badges, jump into water because the badges are
not registered it become difficult for security operatives to track the
owners.
He stated that to some extent the security operatives are
hadicapped as they do not have sufficient equipment like ship to
effectively and efficiently patrol the water ways. This position was
also buttressed by the Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ola
Saad-Ibrahim.
As at the time of filing this report, the probe committee had dissolved into a closed session.
