A two-storey building has partially collapsed after rain pounded it yesterday
at 49 Freeman Street, Oyingbo area of Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.
Part of the building was said to have collapsed on a shop around 6:30 pm but
no casualty was recorded as rescue team was able to rescue people from the
building while those who sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital for
treatment.
Some of those rescued from the building included a pregnant woman, nine month
old baby, children and others, while the landlord of the house escaped. The
state government has vowed to revoke the title of the land.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, were on
hand to rescue residents trapped in the building.
Chief Executive Officer, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu told reporters
that there was no casualty, as his rescue team arrived on time to rescue those
trapped in the building.
He said government had evacuated everyone from the building, sealed it up and
cordoned off the area.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the building would be demolished today to prevent loss
of lives.
He said all stakeholders were fully on ground to ensure there was no loss of
lives, adding that the government had been more proactive in stemming the tide
of collapsed buildings across the state.
He called on Lagosians to cooperate with the rescue team whenever there was
disaster by not looting properties and creating confusion.
