Three people on Monday drowned in a flood which ravaged the Agwagune
Community in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The victims were two 12-year-old girls and a 55-year-old man.
Efforts to retrieve their bodies by the divers, which lasted for about four days, were unsuccessful.
The State Emergency Management Agency said about 60 houses had been washed away by the flood while about 100 others could collapse.
The Director of Information in the agency, Mr. David Akate, also said over 1,400 persons had been displaced.
A leader in the community, Chief Onun Bassey, on Wednesday said although flooding had been perennial in the community, this year’s was different.
The Director-General of SEMA, Mr. Vincent Aquah, who was represented by Akate, advised that those still living in the community should be evacuated immediately.
Aquah, who confirmed the death of the three persons, said the agency would do everything within its powers to avoid further loss of life.
The member representing Biase Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Mr. Igim Okpo, said immediate evacuation of the people in the area was not negotiable.
