At least 18 people were pronounced dead when an 18-seater commercial bus plunged into a river at Rijana Village very close to Kaduna.
A BMW car also plunged into a ditch, killing two people on road.
According to eyewitness of the incident, it happened around 9am on Wednesday August 15, 2012.
The Kaduna State Sector Commander of the
Federal Road Safety Corps, Olumike Olagunju, in an electronic message,
said he sent a rescue team to the scene of the accident.
“Sixteen persons killed as vehicle
plunged into a river at Rijana Village on Kaduna-Abuja highway,” read
the SMS he sent to our correspondent.
However, the Corps Deputy Education
Officer, Bisi Kazeem, said two occupants of the BMW died in the
accident. He added that the Sector Commander of the Kaduna unit visited
the scene with his officers.
The accident, according to an eyewitness, caused heavy traffic on both sides of the highway.
