Nigerian Police And The Resolution Of Murder Cases

The speed at which the police investigated the murder of Cynthia Osokogu, a post graduate student of Nassarawa State University, Keffi, and arrested the culprits behind it should be commended by all.
This sterling performance by the police gives us much to hope for. It is also a sharp departure from the shoddy and uninspiring manner our law enforcement agents carry out their duty of investigating homicide cases in the country. To us, it is an assurance that our policemen have the expertise to resolve complex crimes and murders, given the right atmosphere and leadership.

We also hope that this impressive performance in unravelling the Osokogu murder is not a flash in the pan and that it was not motivated by the fact that the victim was the daughter of an Army General. If it is a sign of greater things to come, as explained by the Lagos police boss, Umaru Manko, then we say kudos to the police.

It is a long time that we have read of men of the Nigeria Police achieving this kind of feat in the investigation and arrest of murder suspects. Perhaps, the speedy investigation and arrest of the  suspects involved in this dastardly murder of Miss Osokogu has to do with the new spirit of effective service delivery being championed by the new Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.

On 21 July, Cynthia Osokogu, the only daughter of retired Major-General Frank Osokogu, was strangled after being allegedly tied to a bed with a chain by her murderers whom she met on the social media network, facebook. The following day, one of the suspected murderers, using an anonymous number, phoned the hotel where she was killed and told the staff to go into the room and pick up her corpse. Acting swiftly, the police, through the help of the communications network used, were able to identify the number of the girlfriend of one of the suspects. Lagos Police boss, Manko said this involved a painstaking examination of the call log of the number to identify a consistent one which led to the discovery of the phone number of one of the suspects’ girlfriend.

After this, the police, using ingenious tactics, succeeded in luring her to Lagos. Through her, they were able to arrest one of the suspects in Anambra State who then led them to the home of the prime suspect in Festac, Lagos. In all, it took the police less than a month to resolve this particular intriguing murder case. We commend them and hope that they will apply the same dexterity in resolving other criminal cases brought before them.

Now that the police have charged the suspects to court, we also implore them to prosecute the case diligently by not leaving any loophole for the suspects to explore and evade justice. The law should be allowed to take its course in this case. With this feat, it is our wish that the police hierarchy will look into other unsolved murder cases in the country with a view to bringing the culprits to book.

We particularly would want the new Inspector-General of Police to reopen the case files of the murder of the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige and Pa Alfred Rewane, and bring the suspects to book. We believe that it is not too late to fish out those involved in the killing of these patriotic Nigerians.
