Rivers State Police command have defused an improvised explosive device
(IED) in the state-owned banana farm at Ueken in Tai Local Government Area of
the state.
Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, the Spokesman for the police command, stated this in Port Harcourt on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said that the command had swept and secured the banana farm, adding that unknown persons might have planted the IED to scare workers from the plantation.
Ugwuegbulam said that the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) of the command had swung into action on receiving the information and defused the IED successfully. He said that there was no casualty and that the incident occurred on August 15. NAN learnt that the state government had acquired the land to establish a banana farm with a Mexican firm last year.
The acquisition of the land had been causing misunderstanding in the community, as some persons alleged that government did not pay compensation after taking over their land.
Meanwhile, tanker drivers have crippled commercial and social activities in some parts of Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, southsouth Nigeria, today.
We learnt that all access roads leading to NNS Pathfinder naval base in the suburb of Port Harcourt were paralysed today as tanker drivers plying the roads blocked them in protest against the poor condition of the roads.
The tanker drivers said they have complained about the terrible condition of the roads which have been damaging their haulage vehicles to the authorities but nothing has been done by the state government. Mr. Collins Amadi, Chairman of Community Development,CDC, of Rumuolumeni corroborated the complaints of the tanker drivers, saying the community has joined in the protest until the government repairs the roads to stop avoidable carnage.
Amadi regretted that official complaints have been made to the state government and Obio/Akpor Local Council but nothing has been done.
Meanwhile,Victor Giadom, the Commissioner for Works, has appealed to residents of the state capital to be patient with the state government, assuring them that the roads will be repaired soon.
