An unidentified young man was electrocuted on Tuesday while trying to burgle a
shop at number 22, Ezza Road, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state.
It was learnt from a reliable source that the burglar and his accomplices who escaped, attempted gaining entrance into the shop known as ‘Variety Stores’ after they destroyed the outer burglary proof of the door.
The duo could not gain entrance into the main store as the inner burglary proof proved difficult to cut.
It was also gathered that as the burglars struggled to accomplish their mission, they went to a nearby tailoring shop and forced the door open.
Having destroyed the door, the late burglar attempted to gain entrance into the provision shop through the ceiling but met another stiff resistance from the burglary proof installed under the ceiling.
The source said that there was power outage at the time of the operation but the robber was unfortunate as power was restored at the time he was tampering with the burglary proof and was electrocuted in the process.
The Ebonyi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sylvester Igbo, who confirmed the incident, said that the shop’s owner alerted the police on discovering that someone was lying dead inside the ceiling.
“The corpse was yet to be identified and has been deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki for autopsy.
“Police have commenced investigations to unravel the full details of the incident,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mrs Virtue Chukwu, owner of the shop, said she had lost over N1.8 million to incessant burglaries in her shop, which made her to install the inner burglary proof.
“This is the eighth burglary on my shop, although I am not too shocked over the incident except for the corpse of the dead robber.
“I am just returning from a church programme, where I prayed that God should arrest the robbers because they have been making life miserable for me.
“I don’t know whether it is deliberate or coincidental but they always rob me whenever it rains and you will notice that it rained earlier today,” she said. (NAN)
