PRESIDENT of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo
Oritsejafor, has congratulated the archbishop of the Archdiocese of
Abuja, Most Reverend John Onaiyekan, on his appointment by Pope Benedict
XVI as a cardinal.
In a personal message to the cleric on Thursday, Oritsejafor said the appointment had placed Onaiyekan on global map.
“It is with joy that I received the news of your appointment as a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI.
“I am happy that this appointment has placed Nigeria on the world map of Christendom and your fame now spans the globe.
“I am particularly happy because of your current status as one of the cardinal electors, a position which qualifies you to be among those to choose Pope Benedict’s successor.
“I pray that you will pursue with vigour, those attributes that earned you this appointment,” the message read.
Also, His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Okogie, Emeritus Archbishop of Lagos Catholic Archdiocese, on Thursday, during an event organised by members of Lagos Catholic Archdiocese to celebrate his retirement, said he was happy for the newly appointed Cardinal Onaiyekan.
The cleric said it was an honour to Nigeria to have one more cardinals, as some countries did not even have one.
He welcomed the new cardinal to the club of cardinals and wished him the best.(Tribune)
