Boko Haram: Gunmen attack Adamawa police station, kill officer

GUNMEN suspected to be members of the Islamic Boko Haram sect bombed a kiosk in the Abaganaram ward, Maiduguri metropolis, injuring one of the soldiers that engaged the sect members in a shoot out for more than half an hour, yesterday.

The bombings occurred as unknown gunmen attacked a police station for the second time in a week in Adamawa State, Tuesday, killing a police corporal and snatching his AK 47 riffle. This brings  the number of policemen killed in the state to four within the week.

Last Sunday night, some unidentified  gunmen ransacked the Shuwa Divisional Police Station in Madagali Local Government Area, killing three police officers. On Tuesday night, they attacked Demsa Divisional Police Station, about 40 kilometres from Yola, the state capital and killed their latest victim, after exploding four locally made bombs at different locations within the station. There were, however, no casualties.

However, yesterday’s bomb attack by suspected adherents of Boko Haram, started at about 7.30 a.m, sending many people scampering for safety. The injured soldier was rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH, by JTF patrol vehicle for treatment at the

Emergency and Intensive Care Unit of the hospital at 9.35am. Five vehicles and six tricycles were also destroyed during the incident.

Confirming the story, spokesman for the JTF,  Lt.-Col. Hassan Mohammed, said in statement: “At about 7.30 a.m,  around the Customs Bridge area of Maiduguri, gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram detonated an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, in a kiosk. The explosion destroyed some cars in the area. However, no life was lost in the incident.”

Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the attack. The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Altine Daniel, who confirmed the story told Vanguard that one of the attackers was equally gunned down.

She said: ”At about 17:20hours on Tuesday, some unidentified gunmen attacked the Demsa Divisional Police Station killing one of our men, identified as Corporal Lukman Abdullahi and carting away the A.K47 rifle of the deceased.”

According to her, the police, however, returned fire for fire, killing one of the attackers just as the quick response of the people of the town to the distress call by the police sent the attackers fleeing.
