A mysterious mid-day fire, yesterday, completely destroyed a multi-million Naira house owned by the Benue State Governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam, in Makurdi, the state capital.
The state government, however, blamed the mystery fire on the opposition.
Media Director to the Governor, Mr James Uloko, said the fire started few minutes after 1p.m. and completely gutted one of the massive buildings in the governor’s private estate.
According to Uloko, the fire incident may not be unconnected to alleged action of an opposition party which “threatened to make the state ungovernable, sensing defeat at the election tribunal.’’ He described the incident as an “inhuman act.”
However, security men on duty at the time of the incident told Vanguard that they heard voices from behind the building, located in Hudco Quarters of the High Level area in Makurdi, adding that before they could go behind to know the intruders, a fire cannon was thrown into one of the blocks which resulted into the huge flame that engulfed the building.
State Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Mohammed, who was one of the early callers at the spot said no arrests had been made but stressed that the police would undertake a thorough investigation to unravel the cause of the inferno (vanguardngr).
