Unknown gunmen on a motorcycle, yesterday, killed two police officers in Kano State and injured two others in what appears to be renewed attack in the city that witnessed the worst attack by Boko Haram on January 20, when no fewer that 186 people were killed.
The incident occurred behind old Bank of the North headquarters within the precinct of the private residence of Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar at Gandu Albasa area of the municipality.
Boko Haram also killed two policemen in Minna, Niger State about two weeks after three other policemen were shot dead by gunmen believed to be members of the sect.
A statement by Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Magaji Majia, confirmed that the attack occurred at 8.30am.
The statement read: “As a result of the attack, two died on the spot, while two other security personnel were injured. They are receiving treatment,” at an undisclosed hospital.
Some residents had earlier claimed that the Kano home of the IG was attacked by the group, killing about six guards at the entrance. Police denied the allegation, saying the IG’s home was “not attacked.”
Majia stated that no fewer than 15 suspects were picked up during a search of the area, pointing out that full investigation had commenced to unravel the true identities of the attackers.
Vanguard gathered that the incident, however, forced the students of the adjourning Rumfa College to flee the school.
The attack on the security personnel in the city coincided with the sudden withdrawal of traffic policemen from the city centre, an action that caused heavy traffic snarl in the town.
A committee set up Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso in the wake up the January 20 attack, with an elder-statesman, Magaji Danbatta as chairman, had recommended outright ban of Okada riders in Kano.
Meanwhile, Vanguard gathered that the Minna victims were at a police check point carrying out routine check on vehicles coming in and out of the state capital, when the unidentified gunmen riding on a motorcycle opened fire on them.(vanguardngr)
