Ogun State Scraps Nigeria’s Only University of Education (Tai Solarin University of Education )

Downgrades it to an institute of education under the Olabisi Onabanjo University

The only University of Education in Nigeria, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) has been scrapped, following a pronouncement by the State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.
Amosun, represented by the commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Segun Odubela, also announced the merger of four Information Communications Technology (ICT) polytechnics into one, and named it the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OSITECH), Igbesa.

TASUED, formerly Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE) was upgraded to a University of Education in January 2005 by the former Governor of the state, Gbenga Daniel.

Amosun directed that TASUED would now be made an Institute of Education in Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, while the campus would revert to its status quo as TASCE. TASCE had earlier been relocated to Omu Ijebu.

The four ICT Polytechnics, though merged under one umbrella will retain their campuses as satellite campuses of OSITECH.

The government decision has been greeted with mixed reactions, as some students of TASUED protested the change in status, arguing that it was politically motivated and could mortgage their future.

In defense of the government's decision, the state commissioner for Information and Strategy, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said the decisions were made based on the report of the committee set up to review higher institutions in the state.

Odubela clarified that rather than number and politics, the government valued the quality of education offered in higher institutions in the state, which has the highest number of higher institutions in the country.(daily times)
