Man Arrested For Robbing Accident Victim

A 32-year-old man appeared before an Apapa Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing from an accident victim.

Bartholomew Mbatuonu, an unemployed man, was arraigned for theft of items and cash totalling N200,000 from one Georgina Chijioke, while pretending to assist her in an accident she later died in.
He was arraigned before Chief Magistrate E. Ogundare on a one-count charge of stealing.

The Prosecutor, Corporal John Iberedem, told the court that the accused stole three bags containing clothing, shoes and cash belonging to the deceased.
The accident was said to have occurred around Maza-Maza, on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on July 2, 2010.

Iberedem said the accused stole the goods while pretending to help the victims of the bus accident.
He added that the accused was caught by another passerby who was assisting the accident victims.
The prosecutor said that the offence was punishable under Section 285 (5) (B), of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos 2011.

Mbatuonu, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Ogundare granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000, with one surety in like sum.
He also ordered the surety to show evidence of tax payment to the State Government, as part of the bail conditions, and adjourned the case to October 12, 2012, for further hearing.
