A 15-year-old marriage between Israel Owoyomi and Toyin Owoyomi, was
dissolved by the Oshodi Customary court on Monday, following allegations of
adultery and fetishism.
Thirty-seven-year-old Toyin filed the divorce suit, alleging that her husband was adulterous and ritualistic.
Toyin, a computer operator, said that her husband had also attempted to sacrifice her for money, in a ritual.
She accused Owoyomi of abandoning his family and acting strange since he became actively involved in politics.
"He visits herbalists and does strange things, like buying white dishes and clay pots," she said.
Owoyomi, 44, however, denied all the allegations, accusing his wife of abandoning him after he had a spiritual attack.
Following his purported spiritual attack, Owoyomi said a prophet had told him to give a white dish filled with all naira note denominations to his wife to take to a certain place.
"My wife refused to help me carry the dish, even though she knew that it was a matter of life and death for me," he said.
“I had to look for another woman to carry the dish, but I was compelled to marry her. I had to also lie to the woman that I was never married before I could convince her to help me with the ritual."
The court president, A. Olorunimbe, dissolved the marriage, stating that said "both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage".
Olurunimbe, however, gave custody of the couple's two kids to Toyin, and ordered Owoyomi to pay the children's school fees and upkeep allowance.
The court judgement did not go down well with Owoyomi, who wanted to have custody of the children.
But the court president urged Owoyomi to take his grudges to the Family Court if he wanted to fight for custody
