Operatives of the zonal Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Squad led by a Superintendent
of Police, Mr Segun Fagbohun, have arrested a man for allegedly tampering with
the NNPC pipeline in Festac area of Lagos State.
The suspect in company with some other accomplices reportedly stormed the area on 12 July, 2012 and were busy filling their containers with petroleum product when the police were alerted.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG zone 2, Mamman Ibrahim Tsafe, was said to have immediately ordered the zonal Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Squad to the scene, and on sighting the police team, the suspects attempted to escape through the canal but one of them was not lucky as he was arrested.
Speaking with journalists when the suspect was paraded, the AIG warned pipeline vandals to steer clear of the Zone 2 Police Command comprising Ogun and Lagos States or be ready for a total war with the police.
Tsafe described oil pipeline vandalism and stealing of NNPC petroleum product as economic sabotage which his men will not tolerate.
Answering questions from journalists, the suspect gave the name of the leader of the gang. He also revealed that they have many members who are now at large following his arrest.
The police chief said the fleeing suspects would be arrested while the arrested one would be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.
He said the recovered product would be returned to NNPC immediately.
