Federal Road Safety Corps Records 57,793 Arrests & 148 Deaths In 9 Months -
No fewer than 148 persons died in road accidents in Lagos State from January to September 2012, Sector Commander, Lagos Sector Command, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Nseobong Akpabio, has said.
Akpabio also said 57,793 traffic offenders were arrested in the state during the period.
The sector commander stated this at a one-day retreat for all FRSC patrol leaders in the state on Monday.
He said the breakdown of the figures showed that in the first quarter, 66 fatalities were recorded against the 51 and 31 deaths recorded in the second and third quarters of the year.
On traffic offenders, Akpabio said in the first quarter, 14,134 offenders were apprehended.
He said the figure jumped up in the second quarter which recorded 18,665 while the third quarter rose to 24,994.
He said some of the initiatives undertaken to ensure a reduction in fatalities, were realignment of commands, operation FRSC everywhere, patrol operations overhaul, among others.
He said, “No doubt we have our challenges. No doubt we have traverse great ground over and above our challenges in pursuit of our goals of safe roads fuller lives.
“However, while some may attempt to say there was an improvement in the third quarter as against the second quarter, I do not think it calls for celebration as the margin by my estimation was not robust enough to give us a comfortable position.
“Therefore, to me, this is the time to work harder – the fourth quarter is the time to make greater difference.”
Akpabio said during the period, the commission recorded 901 traffic cases.
He stated, “I dare assert that there is no better time for this retreat than now. We must bear in mind the increasing sophistication of our environment and embrace it with courage and knowledge, for these are the elements which can see us through.
“Needless to say we must seek and adopt strategies that work. We must adopt new thoughts to break the jinx here.”
He said the corps’ commitment to zero road crash must remain unwavering, stressing that the quest for a tremendous reduction in road crashes within their domain should drive their passion now.
