Rio Ferdinand may not shake hands with Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge on Sunday _ Rio Ferdinand will have another meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson this week, this
time to discuss whether or not the defender will shake the hand of Ashley Cole
when Manchester United visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The pair were on opposing sides during the John Terry race row this year, with Cole acting as a witness for his Chelsea colleague in the case with Rio’s brother, Anton.
Their relationship was further soured when the United man directed a tweet – for which he was fined by the FA – at his former England team-mate, labelling him ‘choc-ice’, a derogatory term with racial connotations.
QPR defender Anton has already come up against Cole since Terry was cleared in criminal court of racially abusing him in a Premier League match, and chose to shun the pre-match handshake.
Should, as expected, Rio shun the pre-match ritual with Cole, it will be the latest in the a long line of embarrassing incidents for the FA-driven ‘act of sportsmanship’.
Since it was bought in, Terry has been snubbed by Manchester City’s Wayne Bridge following revelations about his private life, Samir Nasri has ignored William Gallas following fall-out on international duty, while Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez almost came to blows the first time they met after the Liverpool man had been found guilty of racially abusing the United star.
