Governor Ajimobi Bans Street Begging In Oyo State - The Oyo State Government on Friday said street begging would no
longer be tolerated in the state. The state Governor, Mr Abiola Ajimobi,
stated this at the maiden Ajumose New Year party for the physically
challenged persons in Ibadan.
According to him, the state government has concluded arrangements to remove destitute persons from all the streets in Ibadan.
The governor was represented by Mr Paul Adelabu, his Special Adviser on People Living With Disabilities. He said government would empower them with the means of livelihood, to enable them to contribute to the development of the society.
He said various skill acquisition programmes had been made to train them after which government would provide money and equipment for them to take off.
Ajimobi said the beggars on the streets were not from the state. He said government would remove all beggars along the streets in the metropolis within the next two weeks and take them back to their states.
He said anyone found on the streets begging thereafter, would be detained in the rehabilitation homes.
Ajimobi said anyone with physical challenges could still function well in the society because government had put everything in place to make them live a better life.
The governor appealed to members of the public to regard the physically challenged persons as part of them and always care for them. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that more than 200 persons attended the ceremony where food and gifts were distributed.
